Whenever the world is in danger, Vishnu comes in different forms to protect life on earth. One such avatar is that of the fish - the Matsya avatar.

It is said that during the great flood (that is a common theme in many religions), some humans get on a giant boat with animals and plants of differing species. The humans had been forewarned about the flood, and were told that help will come at the right time. And it did. Life survived.
